Make It So
A significant number of my clients are entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of coming to grips with “I can do anything but I can no longer do everything.”
They are torn between wanting to maintain their website themselves (and as a result nothing gets done) vs ‘letting go’ and outsourcing website maintenance to someone else.
When I acquire a new client, it’s not uncommon to see their website’s masthead promoting an event that happened two years ago, or their ‘Upcoming Events’ page displaying events four years ago. I once was discussing website updates with a new client and casually mentioned their Saturday office hours, to which they replied “We haven’t been open on Saturday for five years.”
I understand. They are focusing on running the business and all that entails, and don’t have time to focus on the website. I usually use two analogies:
- In Star Trek TNG, Jean-Luc Picard would say, “Make it so” and his crew would make it so. I tell the entrepreneur that her job is to simply say to me “Make it so”, and my job is to do it.
- Using another Star Trek analogy, you never saw Captain Kirk dash into the engine room, push Scotty aside and work on the engine himself.
If this resonates with you, I understand. If you are to the point where you have hired a Virtual Assistant (or are considering doing so) then it’s also time to hire a Virtual Webmaster. Then you can focus on your business without making excuses for your website.
