The Value of Maintaining a Website Clone

As a professional company engaged in the business of website support, maintenance, and security, we have developed several best-practices.  This article describes two of them.

It happened again today. The vendor of a popular WordPress plugin released a new version today.  Unfortunately that new version is defective. It has a bug. It is no longer possible to perform certain important tasks due to this bug. And to make matters worse, this plugin offers the option of automatically installing updates when they are published.

  1. We turn off automatic updates. We want the decision to install the update to be our decision. We do this for one reason: If problems appear after the update then we are immediately aware of the culprit and can back the update out.
  2. We maintain a clone of each client’s website on an internal server.  All updates are installed and tested on the clone first. It the update causes a problem, it never affects the live website.

One of the reasons why you should turn your website over to a professional website management company.
