The Value of Maintaining a Website Clone
As a professional company engaged in the business of website support, maintenance, and security, we have developed several best-practices. This article describes two of them.
It happened again today. The vendor of a popular WordPress plugin released a new version today. Unfortunately that new version is defective. It has a bug. It is no longer possible to perform certain important tasks due to this bug. And to make matters worse, this plugin offers the option of automatically installing updates when they are published.
- We turn off automatic updates. We want the decision to install the update to be our decision. We do this for one reason: If problems appear after the update then we are immediately aware of the culprit and can back the update out.
- We maintain a clone of each client’s website on an internal server. All updates are installed and tested on the clone first. It the update causes a problem, it never affects the live website.
One of the reasons why you should turn your website over to a professional website management company.
