“My Previous Webmaster Died”
We acquired a new client this week whose previous webmaster died and took all the website access information to his grave.
This happens more often that you’d imagine. Fortunately, most web hosting companies, domain name registrars, etc have dealt with this many times before. Recovering from it is not as difficult as you might think.
Conscientious webmasters and website developers should always make sure that the website owners have current records of URLs, usernames, and passwords. When I deliver a copy of these records to my clients, I always say “Keep this in a safe place in case I go under a bus.”
And finally, if your webmaster won’t provide you with these records then find a new webmaster – before he goes under a bus.
